15 Ways Mobile Will Change Our Lives.

In late February, three of us—Alex Pallete and Ramon Jimenez from the JWT Global Task Force and Will Palley, trends strategist for JWTIntelligence—rented a modernist flat in Barcelona and set about covering the Mobile World Congress 2012. For three and a half packed days, we made our way through keynotes, panels and 1,400 exhibitors, along with 67,000 attendees ready to network every corner of the impressive Fira de Barcelona—all of it presented under the promising line “Redefining Mobile.”

True to JWT’s “worldmade” ethos, we linked up with other colleagues in attendance and swapped insights each day. We’ve condensed what we learned in this report, 15 Ways Mobile Will Change Our Lives. These takeaways came out of three main themes that defined each day in Barcelona:

Day one: Everything is connected

The first day struck those of us new to the event with its stunning numbers. Counted by billions, the growth forecast for mobile and connectivity in general is mind-blowing. That’s because the future is not just about connected people and handsets. With the Internet of Things, everything will be connected, interacting, making decisions. We left that day with one clear thought: Very soon, it’ll all be connected.

Day two: Everyone is empowered

The seemingly infinite possibilities of mobile technology started adding up in our heads, with company after company demonstrating features that enable people to do things that seem to go beyond even science fiction. Technology is getting simpler, more human. The experience is becoming seamless. Users will have better security and complete data control. Day two outlined a future in which people won’t have to learn from technology, because technology will learn from us; the change is about human empowerment.

Day three: A new, better world

It’s hard to imagine another event of this size and diversity where everyone agrees on the path to success: collaboration. Mobile World Congress 2012 was filled with themes of optimism, collaboration, healthier living and transparency. The focus how to make our lives simpler, easier, more equal. Hans Vestberg, Ericsson’s CEO, condensed day three with the line: “When one person connects, their life changes. With everything connected, our world changes.”

There was countless evidence supporting Ericsson’s thesis. A congress with a theme of “Redefining Mobile” in actuality led us to conclusions on how mobile will redefine our lives. Take a look at our report, and let us know what you think.
